Horse Head Bottle Opener
Horse Head Bottle Opener
I find that a good blacksmith must be a combination of a mathematical thinker as well as an artistic sculptor. For the typical project that leaves my forge, there are plenty of material, weight, and cost calculations. Being sure each design is functional, ships safely, and it very durable for decades to come are always in my top priorities.
However, each design must also be visually balanced, ergonomically pleasing, and well sculpted. Each of my horse head bottle openers is entirely hand forged from rectangular mild steel bar stock. I create the profile first, using the edges of the anvil to make set downs that form the muzzle, jaw and neck. Then, I use my own hand forged tooling to create the details of the mane, eyes, mouth and nose.
After hot punching a hole and sizing it over the horn of the anvil, I test each opener I make to be sure that it will work every time. The opener is finished with my own blend of wax and oil applied hot on the anvil, which means a lifetime of reliable use.
